The bathroom is one of the spaces in the house that often gets a makeover first. Other than the kitchen, it’s probably the room with the most fixtures that are used every single day in a house. As a result, it’s also the room that quickly becomes outdated when you leave it to sit for too long. If you’re planning on selling your house, then upgrading different areas will help to add value to it. But if you’re not planning to sell, that doesn’t mean you can’t renovate and make your bathroom the way you want it to.

Whether your bathroom is in need of a renovation or not, you can either do it yourself or you can choose to hire bathroom renovations experts in your local area. Bringing in the experts is a great idea, especially if you’re upgrading plumbing or electricals. There are some things you can do yourself, such as changing out fixtures, but there are other things that you really shouldn’t do yourself, such as installing a new bath. If you’ve ever considered renovating your bathroom, you’re in the right place because we’ve put together some of the best reasons why you should go for it:

  1. You get to give your bathroom a facelift. Over time, your bathroom starts to look more and more dated. Colours fade, fashions change and the plumbing can start to crumble on you. When this happens, the old carpeted floor that you have may smell and even the fixtures and fittings could wear out. The tiling, the colours, the toilet and even the faucets can make it very obvious that your bathroom is decades old. Having a more modern bathroom space is a great way to increase the value of your home. You don’t want to be bored by your space, and you can try something new to brighten up the start and the end of your day by having a bathroom that’s more reflective of your personality and the matches the modern finishings of the rest of the house. A renovated bathroom will not only spill over into a master bedroom to give it a new look, but it will also be clean and inviting.
  2. You can solve your plumbing issues. Often people wait to renovate until they absolutely have to, and if you’re doing this then it might be because of plumbing issues. Over time, the plumbing can and will break down. Given the amount of time in the day that you use your bathroom, it’s important that you are maintaining the plumbing. If you have a leaky tap or there’s something leaking under the bath, you’re going to notice the smell of mold and rot. If you start to notice that odour and the paint has started to peel and the tiles are starting to break, then it’s a great time now to tackle remodeling and eliminate this as a problem. The best part is that you can hire a company to come in and fix these problems for you without having to continue to live with them.
  3. You can add value to the house. The bathroom may be one of the smallest rooms in the home, but it’s also one of the most important. A house that comes with a renovated bathroom becomes more valuable, and if you’re looking to sell your house in future, then investing in your bathroom is a great way to add some extra cash to it. Prospective buyers can be very much put off by old bathroom fixtures and if you’re looking to ensure that your house sells, then you need to have an impressive bathroom. Nothing attracts a prospective buyer more than a clean and up to date bathroom, especially if you have multiple bathrooms in your house that all have a uniform look.
  4. You make your bathroom safer. Over time, your bathroom can become unsafe. We talked about the plumbing issues that can lead to mold or mildew smells, but certain hazards in the bathroom come up over time like slippery flooring. If you had an injury or you were recovering from an accident, you want to be able to get in and out of your bath and on and off your toilet easily. You can make your bathroom safer by installing handrails. Bathroom remodels allow you to install safety features such as walk in showers and slip resistant flooring. Not only will they add value, but they add that extra layer of safety you’ve been looking for.
  5. You could add another bathroom. When you choose to renovate your bathroom, you have the opportunity to add another one. Older homes usually only have a single bathroom. When you add a guest bathroom or an en suite, you can bring your older home up to today’s standards. If you add a bathroom, you may increase the value of your home by as much as 20%, especially if that bathroom is upstairs and you have one downstairs. Adding another bathroom may sound like a big job, but if you’ve got enough space, you can always just widen a room and add a bathroom into the area.
  6. You can improve your bathroom’s energy efficiency. By replacing some of the fixtures and features during renovation, you’ll be able to cut your energy bill almost in half. Low flow toilets, under floor heating and fixtures are aimed at saving water and energy for your bathroom. If you install windows, you’ll be able to avoid turning on the fan for long periods of time, which will save electricity, and you’ll also prevent the walls from gathering moisture. When you prevent the mirrors from fogging up and you provide more air to the bathroom, you keep it clear and well ventilated.
  7. Your bathroom becomes more functional after a renovation. The fluctuating demands on the bathroom are often influenced by changes in life. If you or a family member has become fairly immobile, then changing out the bathroom into a wet room can be a big renovation job. A bathtub is needed when you have younger children, but then a shower could be enough as you get older. The bathroom is no longer functional as people age, especially if they can’t get in and out of the bath. If people only use a shower, swapping the bathroom into the wet room where you can just walk into the space and go is going to be so much more beneficial to you. It’s not just about adding value, but about adding comfort.
  8. The bathroom becomes a personal escape. When you renovate your bathroom, you have a soothing and warm space to retreat into when you need to. Bathrooms aren’t just for functional human need, they are for relaxation too. When you renovate, you can add warm colours and soft lighting, and you can have a soaking tub that enables you to feel like you can escape and relax. The pressures of the day seem to ease away from your shoulders when you are sinking into a hot bath. A clean and attractive bathroom also helps to set you up for the day because you’re mind isn’t cluttered when you’re trying to get ready for work.
  9. You can create something bigger. Older bathrooms are usually smaller than those we have today, so enlarging the bathroom makes it more modern. It also makes it more pleasant and easier to use. Adding that storage space that you need with adding cabinets or shelving in your new bathroom helps you to expand the existing design. Creating a bigger bathroom is a great reason to renovate because then you have more space to manoeuvre and then you have the added bonus of more value to your house.
  10. You could get rid of asbestos. A great reason to renovate your bathroom is to call in the experts and get rid of any potential asbestos. There’s a chance that there is some in your bathroom if your home was built in the 80s or the 90s. All traces have to be removed before the renovations can continue, but you can call in an expert to come and check this for you. In addition to that awesome newly renovated bathroom look, the renovations are going to ensure that all asbestos is promptly removed.

It’s all about keeping it simple. Now you know why you should renovate the bathroom, it’s time to go ahead and start planning.
