There are many great reasons to visit Canada. But just what are some of the most unique reasons to visit this country? Below are the few attractions that you may want to include in your Canada itinerary that stands out from every other country in the world.
The longest coastline in the world
Canada has more coastline than any other country in the world. This coastline makes for some great scenic drives such as the twisting mountain roads of the Pacific Rim Highway in British Columbia and the breathtaking cliff top roads of Newfoundland/Labrador. Look into car rental in Canada to take advantage of these coastal routes.
More lakes than anywhere else on Earth
60% of the world’s lakes can be found in Canada. Some of the country’s most stunning lakes can be found in Alberta. Lake Louise, Peyto Lake and Moraine Lake all have crystal clear water and are surrounded by impressive mountains. If you’re looking for a peaceful lakeside vacation (or even somewhere peaceful to retire to), visit Canada.
The biggest underground shopping complex
Toronto is home to the PATH network, which is the largest underground shopping complex in the world. This subterranean mall contains 1,200 shops, making it a paradise for anyone that loves shopping. Even if you’re not there to shop, it’s still a fascinating place to explore. Featuring underground stations, pedestrian walkways and entrances to offices, it’s almost like a second city underneath the surface.
The largest street festival in North America
There are many other unique attractions to be found in Toronto including the CN Tower and the Distillery District. One particularly unique festival is the Caribana or the Toronto Caribbean Carnival. It’s the largest street festival in North America and will be held between July 28th and August 1st this year.
The only walled city north of Mexico
Toronto isn’t the only unique city worth visiting in Canada. Quebec City happens to be the only walled city north of Mexico. Along with the dramatic Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, narrow streets and the French-speaking population, the city almost feels like a taste of Europe in Canada. Other fascinating cities in Canada include Montreal, Vancouver and Ottawa.
The only polar bear jail in the world
Travel to Churchill in Manitoba and you can see the world’s only polar bear jail. Why is there a jail for polar bears here? Churchill is one of the few cities that is inundated by polar bears and some of them are known to be quite aggressive. The people of Churchill use this place to keep any troublesome polar bears before they can be relocated somewhere safe. Visitors aren’t allowed in the jail, but you can still see it from the outside.
The only place to see timber wolves
Timber wolves (officially known as Eastern Wolves) are a subspecies of grey wolf that are native to the Great Lakes Region of Canada. There are wolf watching tours that you can take across this region to try and spot these rare animals. Canada is also a great place for spotting bears, beavers and arctic foxes.
