It’s the start of a new year; what better time to take the lead on your professional life by setting some goals for yourself? Here are six things you can do to help optimize your career!

1. Keep your files organized. The new year is a great time to go through old files and business cards. Take a look clutter such as magazines, letters, and other paper documents which are no longer of any use. Clearing your desk and filing cabinets will help you to stay organized and manage your workload more effectively. Make it a point not to accumulate anything you don’t need from now on.

2. Keep your resume up-to-date. Even if you’re not looking for a new job, it’s a good idea to periodically update your resume. This exercise is an excellent way to help you take stock of your current skill-set. If it’s been a while since you’ve looked at your resume, you may be pleasantly surprised to see how much you’ve grown professionally since the last time it was updated.

3. Acquire more skills. List three specific skills you’d like to develop or improve upon by the end of the year. Then, do some research on the types of courses, seminars or workshops that will help you to develop these skills. Whether it has to do with learning a new software program or another language, be sure to set concrete goals for yourself to help you to stay on track to realistically acquiring the specific skills you desire.

4. Stay well-read. Make it a habit to read the newspaper daily so that you remain knowledgeable of current affairs. Read at least one business or finance-related book per month. Building in some essential reading time will ensure that you keep your mind business-sharp.

5. Create more networking opportunities. If you’re not doing this already, attend professional networking events to mingle with others who work in your industry. This is a great way to share ideas with your peers and make connections that could potentially develop into future business relationships. In many instances, attending these events can lead to finding a mentor, securing a business deal or even learning about job opportunities in other companies.

6. Strive for work-life balance. It doesn’t have to be all work and no play. Find ways to exercise, spend time with your family and friends, and engage in your favourite activities or hobbies. No matter how hectic your work life may seem, it’s important to have some downtime each day. By making sure you do, you’ll feel invigorated and ready to tackle your career aspirations and professional life.
