Back pain can affect your ability to carry out everyday tasks. While back pain isn’t always curable, there are many that you can get some relief from your discomfort. Here are just a few effective ways to manage back pain.

See a doctor

If you haven’t spoken to a doctor about your back pain, it important to see one – especially if you’ve suffered from chronic back pain. A doctor can diagnose the cause of your back pain and is able to offer treatment options. For severe back pain, you may be prescribed medication, physiotherapy or have to consider surgery as an option.

Invest in a new mattress

There is a link between lack of sleep and back pain. Some people are unable to sleep because of their pain, but a poor night’s sleep can make any inflammation worse. Investing in a new mattress may be a solution. There are orthopedic mattresses specifically designed for those with back pain – they can offer added support, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.  Sleep hygiene is also important to a good night’s sleep.  Keep your room cool, dark and most importantly, turn your cell phone off or leave it in another room.  Have a regular routine and stick to the same bedtime and wake up time every day to get optimal rest.

Try alternative medicine

There may be forms of alternative medicine that may work for you to help relieve pain. Turmeric is just one popular anti-inflammatory herb that could be worth looking into. A doctor may also recommend medical marijuana from a weed dispensary. Not all of these alternative medicines work for everyone.  It is important to speak to your doctor and homeopath for a truly integrated approach to your pain management.

Get a massage

Massages can also alleviate back pain. They can help to loosen up tight muscles and tendons that may be inflamed. You should always use a professional massage therapist in order to get the best results for your back pain.

Try acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine still used today that involves inserting long, thin needles into acupuncture points.  It is often used in combination with other therapies.

Take a hot bath

A hot bath can help alleviate discomfort for someone with a bad back. The heat combined with the buoyancy of the water can release endorphins that help to numb the pain. You may even want to try professional hydrotherapy.

Try yoga

It’s important to keep physically active with back pain. Low impact exercise like yoga is great for people with back problems. You should avoid high impact exercises that involve jumping or running as these can easily aggravate a back problem and make it worse.
