Sangria is not just a summer beverage. Kaitlin Victor, Director of Bar Operations for Chicago’s First Lady Cruises, suggests you brew up this  fall flavoured concoction for Halloween.  We think it’s tasty year round.  Sangria works for everything from backyard drinks under the sun or under a heat lamp.  The beauty of sangria is that you can switch the fruit out for whatever is in season. Apples, grapes and cranberries are also great options.

Sangria Ingredients:

1/4 cup (4 tbsp) Sugar
2 bottles Cabernet Sauvignon (could be substituted for other red wine of your choice)
1 cup (240 mL)  Orange Juice
1/4 cup (60 mL) orange liqueur (such as Grand Marnier or Triple Sec)
24 oz  (710 mL) Club Soda, chilled
2 Oranges Thinly Sliced
1 cup (200 g) fresh blackberries

Directions:

  • Bring sugar and 1 1/4 cups (10 oz) water to a boil in a saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar is dissolved.
  • Remove from heat, and let stand for 10 minutes.
  • Combine sugar mixture, red wine, orange juice, and liqueur in a large container or pitcher; cover and chill for 4 hours.
  • Stir in club soda, oranges, and blackberries. just before serving.
  • Serve over ice.

Keep checking back for more fall cocktail recipes!

*Makes 12 cups (enough for a pitcher).
