Finding a signature fragrance can be surprisingly personal. A perfume can remind you of a particular place, become part of your everyday routine or simply make getting ready feel a little more complete. But with some designer fragrances carrying high price tags, perfume lovers are also looking for more affordable ways to explore new scents.

That has helped fuel interest in perfume dupes and fragrances inspired by well-known scent profiles. Rather than limiting yourself to one expensive bottle, these alternatives can make it easier to experiment with different fragrance families, build a small collection and switch scents depending on the season or occasion.

What Are Perfume Dupes?

The term “perfume dupe” is generally used to describe an affordable fragrance that has a similar scent profile to a more expensive or well-known perfume. That doesn’t necessarily mean the fragrances are identical. Instead, they may share recognizable combinations of floral, woody, citrus, gourmand or musky notes.

For fragrance shoppers, the appeal is fairly straightforward: discovering a scent with some of the characteristics they enjoy without paying the price associated with a luxury fragrance house.

Brands such as divain. have built collections around this idea, offering a wide range of fragrances inspired by familiar scent profiles.

Start With Fragrance Families

If you are shopping for perfume online, understanding fragrance families can make the process much easier.

Floral fragrances often feature notes such as rose, jasmine, iris or orange blossom and can range from light and fresh to rich and powdery.

Woody fragrances tend to use notes such as sandalwood, cedar, vetiver and patchouli. They can feel warm, earthy or sophisticated and are particularly popular during cooler months.

Fresh and citrus fragrances commonly feature bergamot, lemon, mandarin or other bright notes. These scents are often associated with spring and summer because of their lighter character.

Gourmand fragrances, meanwhile, take inspiration from edible notes such as vanilla, caramel, chocolate, coffee and almond. They have become particularly popular with fragrance fans looking for sweeter, warmer scents.

If you’re looking for some inspiration before choosing your next scent, take a look at some of DIVINE’s favourite fragrances and the different combinations of notes found in each.

Pay Attention to the Notes

Perfume descriptions commonly divide a fragrance into top, middle and base notes.

Top notes are what you tend to notice immediately after applying a fragrance and are generally the first impression of a scent. Middle or heart notes emerge as the perfume develops on the skin and form much of its overall character, while base notes develop more slowly and help provide depth to the fragrance.

The world of fragrance is also far more complex than the handful of familiar ingredients that appear in perfume descriptions. The International Fragrance Association (IFRA), which represents the fragrance industry internationally and maintains standards related to the safe use of fragrance ingredients, provides information about the many materials used in fragrance creation.

If you already own a perfume you love, look at its note breakdown. You may discover that several of your favourite fragrances contain the same ingredients or combinations. That information can help you find other perfumes that suit your tastes without relying exclusively on a brand name.

Don’t Expect Every Perfume to Smell the Same on Everyone

One reason fragrance can be difficult to shop for is that your perception of a perfume can change after it has been applied.

A fragrance’s initial impression isn’t necessarily what you’ll smell an hour or several hours later as its different notes develop. The products you wear alongside your perfume, including scented moisturizers and body products, can also influence the overall fragrance.

This is why it’s worth giving a perfume time to develop instead of judging it immediately after spraying it.

Build a Fragrance Wardrobe

The idea of having one signature scent isn’t for everyone. Much like clothing, different fragrances can work for different moods, seasons and occasions.

A fresh citrus or aquatic fragrance can be a good choice for hot summer days, while vanilla, amber and woody scents can feel more at home during fall and winter. You might also prefer something understated for the office and something richer for evenings or special occasions.

Affordable perfumes and fragrance alternatives make this type of experimentation more accessible because you don’t necessarily have to make a major investment every time you want to try something different.

Make Your Perfume Last Longer

Where and how you apply perfume can also make a difference.

Fragrance is commonly applied to pulse points such as the wrists and neck. Applying it to moisturized skin can help the scent linger, while storing perfume away from direct sunlight, heat and major temperature fluctuations can help protect the fragrance itself.

It is also worth resisting the temptation to overspray. Becoming accustomed to your own perfume over time doesn’t necessarily mean other people can no longer smell it.

Finding the Right Fragrance Is Ultimately Personal

Trends can be a useful source of inspiration, but fragrance is ultimately about what you enjoy wearing.

Instead of focusing exclusively on labels or price, consider the notes and fragrance families you consistently like. Whether that leads you to a luxury perfume, an affordable fragrance or a perfume dupe, the best choice is one you’ll actually want to reach for regularly.

With more fragrance options available at different price points, exploring perfumery doesn’t have to mean committing to a single expensive bottle. It can simply be an opportunity to discover which scents feel most like you.
