Health challenges can come up at any time in life. When you find yourself with an issue that requires a surgical procedure, it is quite normal to only focus on the process leading up to the procedure as well as the surgery itself. However, planning your aftercare is essential to your healing and recovery. Here are four self-care tips to help you get back on your feet again after surgery.

Take your pain medications

Once your surgery is over, it is now time to heal. The healing process can be a painful process. You will need to follow your doctor’s orders and take your pain medications accordingly. Always remember to take them on time and in the right dosage. Pain medications are meant to control and manage pain, so if your pain is still unbearable, you will need to consult your doctor. If your physician has given you the go ahead to exercise, consider starting slowly. Rigorous activities can cause your wound to open up again and cause more pain. It will also help to take your pain medications several minutes before you start exercising.

Care for wounds

It is likely that your doctor will send you home with a list of instructions on how to care for your incision. Ensure that you follow these instructions to heal faster. It is advisable to always wear gloves when handling your incision to prevent infection. You should avoid applying any topical treatment that has not been recommended. An example is rubbing alcohol, which is known to slow wound healing. Change your bandages every day and avoid tight clothes. If you were discharged with a straight catheter , it would be better to have a shower than a bath, and avoid scented soaps while you are at it.

Be patient

After surgery, you may get tired of lying in bed all day, and you might want to get up and go about your activities as soon as possible. Regardless of how strong you think you are, your body needs its full recovery, and this will take time. Allow friends or family to help you out by taking care of you. Don’t try to pick up heavy things as this may cause your stitches to break or your wound to bleed. Be gentle with yourself and sleep as much as you can.

Eat well

Consider nourishing your body with a healthy diet post-surgery. As stated earlier, follow your doctor’s instructions, which in this case, is your doctor’s diet plan for you. Avoid junk and processed foods, as they won’t provide your body with the necessary nutrients needed for a great recovery. Try to incorporate lots of vegetables, whole grains, and lean meat into your diet. You will also find good sources of calcium in foods like milk, cheese, and leafy vegetables. You will need to stay away from habits like smoking and drinking alcohol. Remember to drink lots of water and avoid skipping meals.

These simple tips will put you in the best recovery process so you can be strong again after surgery.
