Two hundred years ago, Freedom Fighter, humanitarian and Civil War spy, Harriet Tubman was born. Through her bravery, strength and altruism, many Black slaves found freedom. Perhaps most famous for her connection to the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman remains the epitome of ‘girl power,’ a celebrated sentiment throughout International Women’s Month.

In a world where women of colour continue to suffer oppression, ignorance and fear, Harriet Tubman’s life continues to resonate. Although denied formal education, Harriet Tubman taught herself to survive and succeed on the land, aligning herself with other abolitionists along the east coast of America in pursuit of freedom for Black slaves.

Working as a conductor on the Underground Railroad, she earned the title ‘Moses of her people,’ guiding families out of slavery and into freedom. Harriet Tubman also worked as a nurse through the Civil War and a spy, becoming the first American woman to lead troops into battle. Ever a pioneer, Harriet Tubman later became a vocal suffragist, fighting for gender-equality. Her commitment to better the quality of life for those around her, made her an inspiration.

In these uncertain times, the world has asked so much of women. There is an increased emotional and physical burden, continually testing the resilience of every mother, daughter, and sister. At times, it can feel hard to picture the after, the space beyond the pain, but we continue because not only do we not have a choice, to stop would be a disservice to those who came before us and those who have yet to come.

To mark the bicentennial year of Harriet Tubman, activities and events have been planned in both her chosen home in the State of New York and along the coast of Maryland where a great deal of abolitionist support and action took place. Throughout her life and even in death, Harriet Tubman has set a fierce standard, empowering women to use their voice and making people listen.
