When it comes to food, there’s nothing quite like experiencing a signature dish straight from its source. While we talk about food and travel on DIVINE, we decided to combine the two and look at what you can experience on Canadian cruise liners. Yes, there are a variety of things to do such as having a spa treatment or enjoying no deposit casino bonuses from CasinoPro, courtesy of the free Wi-Fi, but the food you’ll enjoy will be one of the more memorable experiences.

So let’s take a closer look at some of the most delicious dishes that you’ll find on Canadian cruise liners and various ports, and if you’re looking for a more detailed guide, click here.

Halifax

Halifax is home to the donair, a dish that’s similar to a kebab or gyro without any yogurt sauce or lamb. This dish is known to be savory, yet sweet, and delightfully messy that requires five napkins and two hands. It consists of ground beef that’s been generously spiced which is placed on a large wrap which is then toasted. The meat is then placed on a pita with onions, tomatoes, evaporated milk, garlic powder, sugar, and vinegar.

Charlottetown

Across the shoreline is beautiful Charlottetown, where you can enjoy fresh mussels. They are available in every restaurant and on cruise liners in or going to Prince Edward Island. You’ll likely be served cultured mussels, which are sweeter, plumper, and less gritty than wild mussels. While it might not be Venice Beach, Charlottetown is the mussel mecca and you should try some of their other specialties when you visit.

Gaspé

Gaspé is well-known for its rich fishing culture and due to the seafood movement, that’s been well sustained, there’s is an abundance of fresh fish and seafood available. One of the most popular dishes is a mixed seafood platter, which is usually fried, and lets you experience a bit of everything that the region has to offer. The platter generally includes delicacies such as shrimp, halibut, crab, and lobster. But that’s not all, you’ll also find a range of seafood dishes and stews, soups and chowders, and one of the most sought-after dishes on the menu is the cipaille aux fruits de mer, also known as fish pie.

Montreal

When you think of any Canadian dish, the first thing that comes to mind is poutine. This messy, but delicious dish consists of French fries, cheese curds and gravy is the epitome of comfort food. A variety of high-end restaurants and luxury cruise liners offer a variety of poutine variations; however, it’s hard to improve on something that is almost perfect.

Poutine isn’t the only signature dish to hail from Montreal. Bagels are a fundamental part of the local cuisine. Here you’ll find a wide variety of them with a range of toppings that can be simple or extravagant. Bagels are generally light, chewy and sweet, and each one will be different from the next, so if you’re looking for the best, we recommend that you check out St-Viateur Bagel or Fairmount Bagel when docking.

Quebec City

If you’re looking for a dish that will likely leave you in a food coma, then Tourtiere is what you’d want. This double-crusted meat pie consists of a variety of meats from beef, pork, wild game or veal, and it’s mixed with onions, celery, nutmeg, parsley and carrots (although they are  optional). This meal is usually available around the holidays and it’s perfect for a cold winter or autumn day.
