In addition to professional treatments and expensive anti-wrinkle cream, there are a lot of things that we can do to help our skin stay young looking. Here are some of our basic tips to caring for your skin and helping the appearance of aging.

Skip Straws, and Stop Smoking

Pursing your lips actually creates wrinkles, so if you’re used to drinking with a straw, you should get out of the habit now. Same goes for smoking, which can, according to some studies, add 10 years to your face. Smoking destroys collagen and creates wrinkles. So, stop smoking, your skin will thank you.

Get Your ZZZ’s

Sleep is important when it comes to keeping your skin healthy. Your body re-balances its hydration at night, so we can see under eye circles and fine lines appear when there is a lack of sleep. Also, experts recommend sleeping on your back.  Sleeping on your stomach means that your face is constantly pressed into the folds of the pillow and it can create wrinkles over time. Another trick is to get a silk pillowcase, which is more gentle and smooth on skin and hair than cotton.

Pack of two satin pillowcase, $13.99 on Amazon

Do Not Run

Physical activity can slow down the aging process at a cellular level, so don’t skip that training! The best anti-aging activities are swimming, stretching or walking, but experts don’t recommend running because of the impact it has on the body and face. Running can even create something called the runner’s face, which appears when someone loses a lot of facial fat so wrinkles can be more visible.

Wear Sunscreen Everyday

Sunscreen is definitely a must when It comes to your anti-aging skincare routine. UV exposure is responsible for 80% of visible aging signs, and dermatologists recommend wearing sunscreen everyday, even when it’s not sunny outside. If you tend to forget, choose a day cream that already has SPF in it. If you’re on vacation, reapply throughout the day. Here are some of our favorites:

Vivier Sunscreen Lotion, at select authorized physicians and skin care professionals

Bienfait Multi-Vital, SPF cream from Lancôme, $66 at Sephora

Physical Fusion, SPF 50 from Skinceuticals, at authorized retailers

Retinol Really Works

If you do have wrinkles and fine lines that you want to treat, you can use a product with Retinol, an ingredient that is popular around the world. It helps in producing collagen and also evens out skin tone, while also helping acne problems. Using pure retinol means taking precautions, as it is a strong ingredient, but many products contain a small percentage of retinol. Here are our favourites:

Olay Regenerist Retinol24 Night Moisturizer, $52 at Shoppers Drug Mart

Glow Recipe Avocado Melt Retinol Eye Sleeping Mask, $56 at Sephora
