The home is filled with a wide range of hazards. Unfortunately, many people fall foul of these every year, and some of them are particularly dangerous. The home can be even more dangerous for the elderly or for the very young. If you live in a high crime area, you may also need to make some extra precautions to ensure the home is safe for everyone. You’ll be happy to know that, no matter what your circumstances, you can make the home a lot safer. To help you out, here are a few ideas for you to consider to stay safe in the home:

The Fire Risk

All houses are at risk for a fire. There are a lot of things that can cause fires, from gas and electricity, to open flames and cigarettes. So you need to make sure the home is as safe as it possibly could be. The first thing you need is a smoke detector. Having an exit route in case of a fire is another thing to have in place.

Ensure everyone in the house knows their easiest exit from each room. You should have a fire extinguisher or fire blanket on hand too. If you can, educate the whole household on fire safety – it may just save their live. A lot of fires are caused by human error. So, it is important that everyone is responsible.

Preventing Falls

Falls can happen to everyone, but the elderly are most at risk of complications. To reduce the risk of falls, keep the house clutter-free. Ensure that there are no wires on the floor that you or anyone else can trip over. It may be wise to rearrange the furniture, especially if someone has recently started using a walking device. Rugs can be tripping hazards, as can corners of carpets that are not tacked down properly. It may be a good idea to install handrails and other grips to help elderly people. Fall alarms should be installed in bathrooms and other areas to help someone if they do fall down.

Security Systems

This is a good idea in most homes, however, if you are in a high-crime area, then you should have one installed asap. You can buy security lights which are generally enough to keep out the opportunistic thief. However, there are a lot of other measures you can use. Security cameras, for a start. A heavy-duty front door that is very difficult to kick in. Consider bars on the windows or additional locks. You can also have your lights on a timer if you are away for a few days.

The Weather

You need to protect your home from all sorts of weather; rain getting into the mortar and woodwork can undermine the integrity of the home and potentially make it dangerous. You may need some flood defences if you live in an area that floods every and again. If the weather becomes extremely hot where you are, then you’ll need an air conditioning unit and some great sun blockers for the windows.

We hope that you found these tips for how to stay safe in the home helpful.
