Indulge your lips with the beauty trend taking the cosmetic world by storm – lip oils. Lip oils have emerged as the ultimate game-changer, offering a perfect marriage of hydration and style.  Say goodbye to dry, chapped lips and hello to a radiant, glossy pout that not only looks stunning but also feels irresistibly soft.

Lip oils and lip glosses share the common goal of enhancing the appearance of the lips with a glossy finish, but they differ in formulation and benefits. Lip oils are a relatively newer entrant to the beauty scene, designed to provide hydration, nourishment, and a subtle tint while delivering a glossy shine. These products typically contain a blend of oils which work to moisturize and soften the lips. Lip oils are praised for their lightweight, non-sticky feel, making them a comfortable and modern alternative to traditional lip glosses.

Lip glosses, on the other hand, often contain a thicker, stickier texture, providing a high-shine finish. While lip glosses can offer a more intense and dramatic shine, they may lack the hydrating ingredients that lip oils are known for. Lip oils, with their nourishing ingredients, not only add a glossy sheen but also contribute to the overall health and condition of the lips. If you decide to wear a lip oil year round, make sure to use a lip treatment with an SPF first.

Join us as we share our top picks. We tested six overall, but only four were worthy to be part of “the best lip oils”.

Best Drug Store Lip Oil

NYX Professional Makeup Fat Oil, Lip drip, 12HR Hydration, Non-sticky, Vegan Formula – $14.49 at Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix*

NYX Fat Oil Lip Drip has the consistency of a lip gloss with the hydration of a lip oil. We loved the thick formula which gives it longer lasting power than a traditional lip oil. The lip oil contains vegan squalane, raspberry oil, cloudberry oil.

It has a large doe foot applicator that is similar to other high end lip oils. If you want a natural, glossy look, line your lips, then fill them in with NYX Fat Oil Lip Drip. Our only qualm, and it wasn’t a big deal – the tints were very light, you’ll need to use our lip pencil trick if you want to wear the oil on it’s own.

Best Shimmer Lip Oil

Quo Beauty Shimmer Lip Oil – $13.99 at Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix*

We liked Quo Beauty Shimmer Lip Oil for a few reasons. The first is that it falls within the  Thoughtful Choice criteria which means: No animal testing. Formulated without Parabens, Phthalates, SLS, SLES, Triclosan, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Releasing Agents, Hydroquinone. The packaging also contains Recycled Content (minimum 30%). This is a more sustainable choice.

The Shimmer Lip Oil contains 70% naturally-derived ingredients. The lip oils are enriched with coconut and ginger root oils which hydrate your lips. It is also one of the few shimmer lip oils on the market and that comes across on your lips. It is one of our favourites.

Best Long-Lasting Lip Oil

Clarins Lip Comfort Oil Intense – $36.00 at Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix

Lip Oil: Clarins Lip Comfort Oil Intense in Rosewood

Clarins makes some of the best lip oils on the market. Their Lip Comfort Oil Intense contains hazelnut, jojoba and cranberry oils to soothe your lips. It has more intense colour than any of the other lip oils that we tried and it is long lasting. It leaves a stain behind as well. This will leave your lips looking glossy and comes in a sophisticated shade range.

Our suggestion, because the colour is intense, is to blot it once lightly. You have to be more careful applying this lip oil because of the pigment, but it leaves behind a beautiful finish.

Best Overall Lip Oil

Clarins Lip Comfort Oil – $38.00 at Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix

Lip Oil: Clarins Lip Oil in Raspberry

We’ve raved about Clarins Lip Comfort Oil before for good reason. The packaging is elegant, the you can actually see the tinted shades on your lips so it is a one and done product, it smells amazing and is oh so hydrating. Organic sweetbriar rose, jojoba, and hazelnut oil create a moisture barrier, allowing your lips to stay hydrated and best of all, for a lip oil, it’s long lasting.

Clarins Comfort Oil comes in eight shades that will make your lips look juicy and hydrated. And no, we aren’t cheating by putting two Clarins Lip Oils on the list – each deserved to be here.
