There is a moment in a woman’s life when the ground beneath her quietly shifts. It often begins slowly. A sleepless night here, an unexpected wave of emotion there. A body that suddenly feels unfamiliar.  Thoughts that circle around questions that didn’t exist before start to appear. Who am I now? Where did the woman I used to be go?

For decades she was the strong one. The reliable one. The one who held everything together. She carried responsibilities with quiet determination, showing up for everyone around her – family, partners, colleagues, children, friends. She gave freely, often without stopping to measure how much of herself she was leaving behind in the process.

And then menopause arrives, sometimes abruptly, sometimes gradually, but almost always with a mix of emotions that few women feel fully prepared for. Confusion. Frustration. Fatigue. A sense that the body and mind are rewriting rules we once understood so well. For some women it feels as though the strength they once relied on has suddenly disappeared. Or perhaps the truth is something very different. And sometimes, that moment becomes the beginning of an entirely new journey.

Midlife feels like standing at the threshold of a new landscape. For decades we were told to silently endure this profound recalibration of body and mind. Unexpected hot flashes. Sleepless nights. Waves of anxiety. Irritability and brain fog. Much like travel, menopause, is as unfamiliar and unsettling as stepping into a foreign country at first. The body you have known for decades is suddenly speaking a new language and the map you once relied on no longer feels entirely accurate. And yet, the unfamiliar holds extraordinary possibility.

As someone who cherishes the art of purposeful exploration, I have always believed that the most meaningful journeys are not only the ones that take us across oceans, but the ones that transform us along the way. Each journey is deeply personal. There is no one size fits all solution. If I am honest with myself, I did not know how to approach this new chapter. Hormones or no hormones? Lifestyle changes? Nutrition? Exercise? Stress management? The options seemed endless, yet clear guidance often felt surprisingly limited.

Like many women, I found myself standing at a crossroads. The process has unfolded in an ongoing dialogue, and the conversations have been careful ones, thoughtful and layered, almost like planning a journey whose destination is not yet entirely clear. What I thought would be a simple medical consultation has turned into a profound period of research and discovery. During this exploration, I learned to listen to my body in ways I never had before. And what began as a health inquiry has gradually spilled into the rest of my life. It has influenced how I think about movement, rest, nourishment, and even the conversations that unfold around the dinner table.

I like to think that perhaps this stage of exploration is why women’s travel has surged so dramatically, especially among the 50+ demographic. For decades the travel industry focused on nearly every life stage except this one. Honeymoons, family vacations, and retirement escapes filled the brochures and advertisements. Yet the powerful transition of midlife for women was rarely acknowledged.

That is beginning to change. Resorts and wellness centres are beginning to create programs specifically designed for women navigating menopause. Some take a medical forward approach, offering consultations with specialists, hormone assessments, nutritional programs, and personalized health guidance. Others focus on more holistic paths, integrating movement, mindfulness, nutrition, nature immersion, and ancient rituals. But what they all seem to recognize is something women have always known instinctively: we navigate life better together.

What I did not anticipate, however, was discovering perhaps the most powerful ingredient in navigating this stage of life: community. I have found that community in the remarkable women who travel to visit La Bella Italia. While I may guide them through cobblestone streets, hidden piazzas, and unforgettable meals, the truth is that they guide me as well.

Our conversations wander just as our footsteps do. Over glasses of wine and plates of pasta, the dialogue often turns to the realities of midlife. Hormones, sleepless nights, changing bodies, shifting priorities. What begins as tentative sharing quickly evolves into something more open, more honest, more liberating.

Thoughtful conversations give way to moments of pure, unmatched laughter. Yes, menopause can arrive abruptly, sometimes intrusively, altering our bodies in ways we did not anticipate. But it also introduces us to a new stage of life marked by deeper wisdom, greater authenticity, and a quiet but powerful refusal to keep putting up with what no longer serves us. This is what I see in the women who travel with me. Caring human beings who have prioritized themselves alongside the people they love. Women embracing their age, their wisdom, their evolving identity. And even though we still have much to learn and many conversations ahead of us, we are off to a promising start. I like to think of it as a glass half full. Because every day I see women filling that glass – through conversation, through informed choices about their health, through travel, through laughter, through friendship.

Midlife is not the closing chapter. It is often the beginning of the most authentic one.

The moment we learn something just as important as caring for others.

How to care for ourselves.
