With winter setting in, you want to be as comfortable as possible, so you get your home ready making it feel cozy, and turning up the heat to ensure that you stay warm. When you go outside, you layer your own body so that you can stay warm and beat the cold.

But the problem with winter is that often people forget to cover their ears or cover their heads, which leads to ear pain. The drop in temperature can also lead to discomfort and most people are more susceptible to ear-related infections and issues when in the winter months.

That reduction in temperature can increase your sensitivity to several different ear pain issues, from general discomfort to severe ear infection. You need to be able to protect your ears in the bitter cold in the same way that you would need winter tips for using hearing aids so that you don’t break them. Keeping warm in the winter can help you to avoid ear pain, and here are some other tips to help you to avoid it as well.

  1. Invest in a warm hat. It’s important to shield your ears from the biting winter winds, but it’s even more important if you’re wearing hearing aids. It can be done easily, thankfully, and you can do it effectively by wearing a cap. A high quality form fitting winter hat will serve as a shield to keep the chilly air away from your ears. Choosing materials that are well-insulated such as wool or fleece will help you to lessen any risks of getting earaches and it prevents you from feeling cold as the temperature outside drops.
  2. Buy a muffler. A muffler can provide a layer of protection that you wouldn’t normally get from a hat. Your ears can be protected from the biting cold with a muffler around your neck, that can cover your ears completely. Not only will you find that your winter wear is more stylish, but your ears will feel warm and the cold air won’t be whistling its way through your eardrums.
  3. Preventative medicine is helpful. If your ears do happen to be the victim of an infection or bacteria this winter, then making sure that you are treating it as best you can is important. Preventative medicine is really going to help you here because you can keep on top of any sniffles or colds that could develop into an ear infection. Speak to your doctor if you are dealing with any ear pain. Treating any signs of congestion preventively can help to stop the spread of infection to the ears so that you are just dealing with a runny nose.
  4. Don’t put anything inside your ears. Ear cleaning should only ever be kept to the outer crest of the ear and not the inside of the ear. Maintaining your ear hygiene is crucial, especially if you’re wearing hearing aids. Excessive cleaning can strip the ears of the natural oil. This leaves them vulnerable to infection and discomfort because the oil is there for a reason. Always use gentle and non-invasive methods to clean the ears and don’t stick anything towards the eardrum.
