Canadians are finally able to travel from coast to coast with minimal restrictions…well, kind of. Masks are still mandatory in some places. Travelers need to apply for approval to enter Nova Scotia and PCR testing is required for entry for some provinces. That being said, if you are a fully vaccinated adult, the chances of reuniting with those cousins of yours that live across the country, are high. With restrictions changing day by day, however, it is highly recommended that you double check the COVID-19 updates for the province, city and even the venues you plan on visiting before you arrive.
But what about traveling with kids? It has been said that our unvaccinated littles cannot enjoy the same freedoms as their parents when it comes to travel. As with everything COVID-19 related, that is only partially true and changing daily. So as of today, here is the latest for families traveling within Canada by air, rail and car:
Rail
The rules aboard a train are the same for everyone. All passengers aged two and up must be masked and cannot board the train with any cold or flu type symptoms. Seating is no longer limited on-board so be prepared to sit close to other people. Trains are now cashless, so bring some plastic to pay for any snacks or drinks.
Checked baggage is suspended on the Quebec-Windsor – Jasper – Prince Rupert routes, so keep that in mind if you are traveling with baby gear. If you are traveling on these routes, this is a great time to check out baby gear rental at your destination. Order diapers and send them to your location ahead of time and travel as light as possible.
Air
Airlines recommend researching which provinces need additional paperwork, require self-quarantine, or have non-essential travel restrictions before booking your trip. For example, if you’re looking to enter Prince Edward Island and not quarantine for 14 days, you (and every child over 12) will need a PEI pass before you arrive. And as of right now, everyone in your party will need a COVID-19 test upon entry. Nunavut, however, has completely banned leisure travellers. There are no additional over-arching restrictions for kids flying domestically within Canada. At this point, two fully vaccinated parents flying with unvaccinated children under 12, will not have to quarantine. Keep an eye on provincial requirements just in case things change.
Car
As previously mentioned, research the restrictions at your destination before you go. Border agents will ask health related questions and you may be required to show proof of vaccination. Follow their instructions regarding any further action as they will be the most up to date on what you need to do, where and when.
