Your red lipstick may be your go-to weapon for a night out, but it wasn’t always a fashion statement, especially not in 1912. Elizabeth Arden, the woman behind the eponymous beauty label, was an outspoken feminist, known to have distributed red lipsticks to the suffragettes who marched on Fifth Avenue in 1912. The iconic red lip was, back then, a symbol of the women’s movement. Maybe that’s why we feel so powerful when we wear red lipsticks!

It only makes sense then for Elizabeth Arden to take part in the contemporary feminist movement, especially as Women’s History Month is upon us. The label, founder of the March On campaign, is releasing a new limited edition lipstick, with the help of the amazing Reese Witherspoon, another woman who has been vocal about gender equality, especially in the Hollywood industry.

Elizabeth Arden has pledged to donate $1 million to UN Women, with the help of the proceeds of the lipstick. The red lipstick, now an undeniably empowering symbol for women everywhere, is the perfect way for this beauty label to show their support for the cause – and you can support it too by purchasing the gorgeous lipstick.

Elizabeth Arden March On Limited Edition Lipstick, $33.50
