Makeup mistakes happen, but there are ways to avoid them to help cosmetics enhance your beauty. There are some that we know about. Wearing too much makeup can age you. Too much powder can be drying. Too much black eye liner can make you look harsh. Sometimes though, it is better to hear all about makeup mistakes from an expert. Makeup artist and brand owner Wayne Goss is a YouTube staple sharing beauty tips to his 4mm subscribers.
Goss, who also runs the cosmetics site Wayne Goss, is best-known for his artisan makeup brushes. He recently launched The White Gold Collection – a line of high quality vegan, more affordable synthetic makeup brushes. He shared the following:
“The majority of us will be using makeup to help improve how we look, or even help cover up some of the wrinkles we’ve gained over the years. However, due to some mistakes, the makeup that we’re wearing could actually be doing the opposite effect, and could potentially be adding not just one or two, but up to ten years to our face.”
Here are four makeup mistakes and tips from Wayne Goss for what you should be doing instead:
Makeup Mistake #1: Avoid Metallic Eyeshadow
“Avoid metallic eyeshadows and instead, opt for a matte. Matte generally works best as it doesn’t draw attention to wrinkled areas or creases.
Powder is also easier to apply over creams, especially as its easier to blend with a good quality brush. Never blend eyeshadow with a finger – good quality brushes are made with the intention to blend well with hooded eyelids and fine lines.”
Makeup Mistake #2: Using the Wrong Type of Concealer
“Generally speaking, people may go too light around the eyes with their concealer which can add years to your face, so its really important to get the colour that suits your skin tone.
Cream concealer is always recommended above liquids, and I’d highly recommend applying some on the inner corner of your eye, as that’s the one part of the eye that doesn’t crease.”
Makeup Mistake #3: Not Hydrating Your Skin or Using a Primer
“As we get older, our skin will naturally become drier, which is why hydrating ingredients are so important as you get into your older age.
Look for make-up with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid when you’re on your next makeup and skincare shopping haul to ensure that your products are keeping your skin hydrated.
Before you start applying anything to your face, ensure that you’ve applied a heavy moisturizer to ensure your skin stays hydrated.
Use a good primer before you start applying your makeup to ensure it’ll act as a barrier between your skin and your makeup to help the makeup stay in the right places all day, rather than just in the fine lines.”
Makeup Mistake #4: Blush Application
“I’m a huge fan of blush. The main misconception with blush is still that you should smile and apply it to the apples of your cheeks. Anytime you smile, the face lifts and when you stop smiling, it lowers. This can give the face a drawn appearance. It is a trick that is done in theatre to age you.
As you get older, the skin lines and creases when we smile and this makes a smooth blend difficult. Apply blush higher on the cheekbones to give the lift what you want.”
