It’s spring cleaning season and that means doing all of those household chores that we put off all year. Washing your duvet cover should be done at least once a month, but if you skip the top sheet or have a pet that sleeps in your bed, it should be weekly. This is your spring cleaning reminder that you should wash your duvet cover now in case it slipped your mind.

Tossing the duvet cover into the washer and then the dryer? Easy. The real ordeal that everyone dreads is getting the duvet back into the cover. This time, I was going to be smart though, and actually watch a YouTube video with the best method. Like many people, I rely on what is known as “the ghost” meaning I slip the duvet cover over my head, then flail around inside trying to wrestle with a queen-size duvet. It works, eventually, but it’s a full-body workout that leaves you questioning your life choices.

Today, I had an epiphany and went to YouTube. I searched “the best method to get your duvet cover on”. The first video that came up was from Rachael Ray’s old talk show where they demo’d a method called “the roll”. I watched it, but couldn’t quite get the hang of it. I then went on to the next video from a channel called Which? and it contained “the inside-out” and, once again, “the roll”. The host explained it slowly and it clicked with me.

Here’s how it works: lay your duvet cover flat on the bed, inside-out, with the opening at the foot. Place your duvet on top, lining up all the corners. Starting at the head of the bed, roll both the duvet and the cover together as tightly as possible toward the foot.

Once you reach the end, reach into one corner of the opening and flip the cover right-side out over the duvet corner. Repeat on the other side, then unroll everything back toward the head of the bed.

In a perfect world, once you unroll it, you just zip your cover and you are done. My guess is that the thinner your duvet, the easier it is to manage. My duvet is down, and rather heavy, so it took me two tries to get the roll tight enough for it to work. I had to make a couple of adjustments, but I was still able to finish the entire job in less than four minutes, and it was much less taxing than any other method that I tried.

Don’t get frustrated if it doesn’t work on the first try. Just start over and follow the steps again; it gets easier each time. Safe to say, I won’t be haunted by “the ghost” anymore.
