Halloween may be over, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy spooky family movies year round. Why not enjoy the family movies together and have a movie night. Turn on some fairy lights, snuggle in your warmest blanket, and have some treats ready — and enjoy these movies!
Coraline (2009)
I won’t lie and say this movie did not freak me out as a child, because it absolutely did! This animated classic and favourite of many is a must watch (or rewatch) during Halloween season and beyond. The story follows Coraline, whose parents’ neglect and work have caused her to explore beyond the confines of her new home and what she discovers, though lively at first, quickly becomes a nightmare.
Hotel Transylvania (2012)
This lovely 2012 animated film is the perfect blend of comedy, family, and spookiness. Comically set around Dracula and his hotel for monsters and beasts, his life gets turned around when a human traveler accidentally stumbles into the hotel. To make things worse (for Dracula, at least) the human falls in love with his teenage daughter despite it being clear that he is not welcomed there — at all. Kids love re-watching movies that they like. so turn this one on any time of year.
Ghostbusters (2016)
The female-led settlement of this franchise was met with polarizing reactions, but ultimately, it is a great feel-good film set in this beloved universe. It follows the lives of Abby and Erin, friends and co-authors of a book recounting their experiences with the paranormal. Erin, however, rejected her past involvement with anything of the sort due to her new position at the prestigious Columbia University, until one day, an incident reignites her passion for the cause… For a light-hearted and different twist on this cult classic, definitely check out this movie for a family movie night.
Spirited Away (2002)
A childhood memory of many and a favorite of all, Spirited Away is a film that can, and should, be watched year-round. Directed by the famous Hayao Miyazaki, the mastermind behind many, many beautifully animated and written Japanese animations, the movie follows Chihiro, who in her move to her family’s new home, discovers a world full of magic, and also horrors. Dive into this magical movie with your family!
Hocus Pocus (1993)
A little bit more mature but smile-inducing all the same, Hocus Pocus is known by many as one of the quintessential Halloween films. The film follows the Sanderson sisters, 3 witches to be exact, and their reincarnation into the modern world — one in which Halloween has turned into anything more than a celebration full of disguises and spectacle.
