Have you heard about the Keto Diet and are wondering what it’s all about? The Ketogenic Diet is a way of eating that is very low in carbs and is higher in healthy fat. It sounds strange, but it works! Carbs, or carbohydrates, are nutrients that provide your body with energy – 70% of your daily energy, to be exact. The Keto Diet lowers the intake of carbs and you get the energy from fat molecules – sound complicated? Here’s what you need to know.

The principle behind the “Keto” Diet is to draw energy from the fat in our body. When the body doesn’t get enough energy from glucose, it goes into ketosis. Ketosis is usually a mechanism that is activated only when the body is fasting and breaks down lipids in the kidneys to find the energy needed to maintain the body’s metabolic functions. This diet then seeks to keep the body in a state of ketosis.

So, what should we avoid when opting for this low-carb eating plan? Rice, sugar, bread, pasta, potatoes and other starchy vegetables are to be avoided. You do need a steady intake of food to make sure that  you get enough energy from lipids. Avocados, nuts, cheese and eggs are rich in fat and ideal for this way of eating. Also, make water your best friend and avoid alcohol or beverages that contain a high level of sugar. It’s also important to get enough sleep and to absolutely avoid snacking between meals.

Does this sound like a diet that you would be interested in? Kourtney Kardashian, Adriana Lima and Halle Berry have claimed to be following this low-carb eating plan. It sounds like it’s worth a try to some of us!  Speak with your doctor or health care provider if you plan on starting any new diet.  Ketosis can be dangerous for some people, in rare instances.
