If you’re looking for fun home ideas, downsizing is definitely not one of them! Actually, downsizing is one of those life events that feels exciting and overwhelming all at once however, not always in a good way. So, moving to a smaller home, especially in a big city where apartments feel more like glorified closets, can make you question every item you own. Like, how are you supposed to fit your life into a space that’s smaller than your current living room?

It’s not just about the logistics of where everything goes; it’s the emotional side, too. For example, that favourite armchair? No way it’s squeezing into a studio apartment. Plus, unless you live alone, you’re most likely getting a lot less privacy. Overall, downsizing forces tough decisions, but believe it or not, it’s totally survivable (and maybe a bit manageable too). So, here’s exactly what you need to know!

You’ll Need to Prioritize What Truly Matters

Alright, so here’s the hard truth: not everything you own can come with you. Yes, that’s right! So, downsizing is like curating your own personal museum. Basically, only the best pieces get to make the cut. For example, the waffle iron you haven’t used since the big brunch experiment of 2019? Well, that ideally shouldn’t come with you to your new home.

It’s About Making Tiny Spaces Work Overtime

Okay, so when it comes to smaller spaces, every inch counts. Yes, you probably knew this already! So, furniture isn’t just furniture anymore. When you live in a much smaller home, your furniture tends to double as your storage, too. For example, ottomans that hide blankets, beds with drawers underneath, and tables that fold down when not in use.

But for something more obvious, well, vertical space is your new best friend. It’s always great to use wall-mounted shelves and hooks, but if you’re renting, neither may be possible. But of course, there’s always bookshelves and even those Command Hooks that are renter-friendly. Actually, there’s even the space under your bed and in those weird nooks and crannies that you could look into as well.

Use Self Storage for What You Just Can’t Part With

While some people rave about going clutter-free when downsizing, there’s just something they tend to get wrong. So, you don’t need to say goodbye to everything. Actually, some things don’t belong in a tiny apartment but still hold value; for example, they can be sentimental, seasonal, or just plain useful down the road.

That’s usually why it’s so heavily encouraged to look into self storage, since this basically means next to no clutter while at the same time not having to part with anything. Besides, these facilities are fully secure, so your stuff is in good hands.

Learn to Love the Minimalist Mindset

Like it or not, you’ll need to be a minimalist to a degree. Actually, downsizing is more than just a physical move; it’s a mindset shift. For the most part, living with less doesn’t mean living without; actually, it means focusing on what truly matters. Plus, a lot of people think of downsizing as a fresh start, too, and since you’re moving, technically, it is a fresh start.
