We don\u2019t have the same sprawling entertainment districts as other cities, and sometimes our alcoves work on banker\u2019s hours too. But every once in a while, you come across a hidden gem, a gathering of fellow lovers of fine food and wine, and you realize there\u2019s a whole untapped world beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a resident foodie and relatively new resident of Ottawa, I\u2019ve been slowly chipping away at my bucket list. When I came across the Literary Feast, a cookbook showcase with samples from said cookbooks planned and hosted as part of a suite of events to celebrate Ottawa\u2019s bicentennial includes, well, I was sold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the event, each of the cookbook authors had a booth preparing a signature recipe from their cookbook or recipe arsenal. The crowd swelled throughout the night, flowing between the booths with glasses in hand, and getting a chance to speak with some of the finest chefs in Canada and other prominent figures in the world of <a href=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/en\/two-burger-joints-in-calgary-worth-writing-home-about\/\">food<\/a> and wine.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am a sucker for food-hall style events. Give me an opportunity to walk around, say hi, grab a little sample, I&#8217;m there. Then you tell me each dish was produced by renowned Canadian chefs and voices in the industry who want to share the food of their hearts and homes with you? Yes, chef.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the Literary Feast\u2019s host Chef Joe Thottungal, the event was a source of immense pride: \u201cf<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ood has the power to bring people together.\u201d As a reviewer, walking independently and rather anonymously about the event hall, I was struck by the warmth of strangers. At nearly every table I paused at to try the next sample, I was entreated to impromptu conversations with fellow guests and recommendations for samples worth standing in winding lines for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had a chance to speak with many of the presenting chefs to hear about who they are, what motivates them, and the trials and triumphs of undertaking the immensely creative and taxing process of preparing unique recipes to print with compelling stories to accompany them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I asked Chef Thottungal what words he lives by as a creative, he cited Mahatma Ghandi\u2019s familiar refrain: \u201cin a gentle way you can shake the world.\u201d As one of our neighbours in Ottawa, Chef Thottungal lives this mantra too: each week, he prepares food for the women visiting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stjoeswomenscentre.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. Joe\u2019s Women\u2019s Shelter<\/a>, and for every ticket sold to the Literary Feast, a portion went to the shelter at a time when staff are witnessing a higher volume of vulnerable women seeking assistance with food, clothing, shelter, and other supportive services. It was a rewarding evening all around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a rundown of the books, cookbooks, and authors on showcase along with a peek at the samples I had the chance to try:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>*Some quotes have been lightly edited for brevity and clarity*<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"vineyard-melody-by-namratha-stanley\"><em>Vineyard Melody<\/em> by Namratha Stanley<\/h2>\n<p>Escaping an abusive marriage, Namratha fled India to start anew in Bordeaux, France. Wine and winemaking became a source of courage as much as curiosity for Namratha, and she slowly began rediscovering and reimagining herself.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It meant a great deal to me to be part of the Literary Feast,&#8221; Namratha said. &#8220;It gave me the opportunity to connect with a wonderful audience \u2014 people who love food, wine, storytelling, and life itself. Being surrounded by such talented chefs and authors, each with their own journeys and books, was truly a privilege. There was such warmth, creativity, and passion in the room, which made the experience very special.&#8221;<i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p>At the Literary Feast, I had the opportunity to try Namratha&#8217;s own Grand vin de bordeaux from her line Solicantus Melodie du Sol paired with buttery cheese curds. That&#8217;s <em>Gather, Savor, Share<\/em> from Raghav Chaudhary, the Head Chef of Ottawa&#8217;s Ai\u0101na Restaurant, a compilation of recipes the Ai\u0101na staff make &#8220;in a hurry and in a pinch&#8221; for team meals. It&#8217;s this down-to-earth approach that encapsulates Chef Chaudhary&#8217;s persona as a chef and leader who embraces the fusion of a &#8220;multicultural soul&#8221; with &#8220;Canadian terroir.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was an honour to be a part of the Literary Feast to represent our community. She&#8217;s co-written and contributed to numerous cookbooks including <em>My Thali<\/em>, <em>Great Scoops<\/em>, and <em>Coconut Lagoon<\/em>, that were also on showcase at the Literary Feast.<\/p>\n<p>Her <em>raison d&#8217;\u00eatre<\/em> is simple: &#8220;I write to instruct. I write to amuse &#8230; leaning toward playful, because food is meant to be enjoyed and relished.&#8221; For Anne, working alongside chefs is to translate one art form to another. She&#8217;s an observer, a conduit, a negotiator, and a messenger of a chef&#8217;s vision and voice.
