{"id":1604245,"date":"2021-06-04T00:50:47","date_gmt":"2021-06-04T04:50:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/divine.ca\/?p=1604245"},"modified":"2022-01-08T12:23:18","modified_gmt":"2022-01-08T17:23:18","slug":"influenc-hers-kelsee-briana-jai-youtube-creator-makeup-artist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/divine.ca\/en\/influenc-hers-kelsee-briana-jai-youtube-creator-makeup-artist\/","title":{"rendered":"Influence-Hers: Kelsee Briana Jai, YouTube Creator &#038; Makeup Artist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s up Everybody?\u00a0 It\u2019s Kelsee Briana Jai\u2026.\u201d is how the creator starts each one of her <a href=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/en\/influence-hers-dimitra-from-breakups2makeup\/\">YouTube videos<\/a>.\u00a0 As soon as you hear her bubbly voice, you know you are in for a good time.\u00a0 Kelsee is more than a pretty face and a bubbly personality though.\u00a0 A highly-skilled professional makeup artist, she has worked with the likes of Jill Scott and Tamron Hall.\u00a0 She is one of just a handful of black women in the luxury YouTube space.\u00a0 Watching her blend an eyeshadow seamlessly is something that everyone can learn from.\u00a0 She puts her heart and soul into her videos, developing unique content ideas that inspire others to follow her lead.\u00a0 Her ranking videos where she speaks to her favorite eyeshadow palettes and Battle of the Concealers have been two of her most popular creations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cs-embed cs-embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Huda Beauty Palettes RANKED! | Least to Most FAVE!!!\" width=\"1160\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e4r9fnchDSc?list=PL8ni8d4J4SUefuGj9i_60sabq-ItMyHJq\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>From a young age, Kelsee went with her mother to beauty counters.\u00a0 She noticed how her mother struggled to find her shade match.\u00a0 She would go from counter to counter trying on different products and it became their mission to find the perfect shade.\u00a0 They would go from Fashion Fair to Lanc\u00f4me to MAC to Benefit to Prescriptives.\u00a0 Kelsee learned about all of the products and spoke to the makeup artists solidifying her love of cosmetics.\u00a0 Her mother let her buy one item a week.\u00a0 By the time she was twelve, her Caboodle was filled with designer makeup from lip gloss to eye shadow palettes.<\/p>\n<p>Kelsee shadowed other makeup artists, working as their assistant.\u00a0 She credits working at MAC for helping her hone her skills, \u201cBecause I started so young, a lot of my development came from MAC.\u00a0 It used to be a hard company to get into \u2013 it was a rigorous process.\u00a0 They placed artistry at the forefront and we had to go through a lot of training and seminars.\u00a0 We would get hands-on demos too.\u00a0 That really helped me along with reading books by makeup artists like Bobbi Brown, Sam Fine, Scott Barnes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We sat down with her recently to find out more about what inspired her YouTube channel and found out what her current favourite products are in the latest Influence-HERs.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-inspired-you-to-start-your-youtube-channel\">What inspired you to start your YouTube channel?<\/h2>\n<p>I started my channel about ten years ago.\u00a0 My boyfriend moved to the same city as me and I just got tired of hanging out with boys [laughs].\u00a0 While they were hanging out playing XBOX, I was trying to find my own things to do.\u00a0 I was meeting some people, but in college, at age 18, there just wasn\u2019t anybody that had the same love for makeup.\u00a0 I was in an online community called\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.specktra.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Specktra<\/a> going there because everybody was excited about MAC collections.\u00a0 Then, one day, I discovered YouTube.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1606513\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1606513\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1606513 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/KBJ2.jpg\" alt=\"Kelsee Briana Jai\" width=\"800\" height=\"1067\" srcset=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/KBJ2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/KBJ2-320x427.jpg 320w, https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/KBJ2-560x747.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1606513\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of Kelsee Briana Jai<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Like many people, before they start their channel, I just dove into a deep hole because I discovered this whole other world that I didn\u2019t know existed.\u00a0 I watched a lot of videos and thought \u201cI can do that\u201d because I studied it, I know what I am talking about and I don\u2019t see anybody that looks like me. My first tutorial was a Halloween tutorial that I filmed in my boyfriend\u2019s bathroom.\u00a0 I filmed it on my computer and it had horrible camera quality and figured out how to edit it and thought \u201cThis is where I belong.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-were-the-biggest-challenges-when-you-first-launched-your-youtube-channel\">What were the biggest challenges when you first launched your YouTube channel?<\/h2>\n<p>I didn\u2019t have any challenges when I first started. The challenges kicked in as I started to grow.\u00a0 I wanted to keep up with the times.\u00a0 It was challenging to know that things were changing, that we weren\u2019t just sitting in front of a computer camera and film.\u00a0 We had to upgrade our software.\u00a0 Just making those types of changes was a challenge at first.\u00a0 It was getting use to using new technology.<\/p>\n<p>It was also about being consistent which was a challenge at first because it was just a hobby. I hadn&#8217;t considered that I would need to upload several times a week for consistency. Once I decided it was something that I wanted to do, feeling the motivation to get up, film and have videos every week and be there for people who were starting to depend on my opinions was also challenging.\u00a0 Now, it\u2019s what I do \u2013 I come on and tell people what\u2019s new.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-advice-would-you-give-someone-just-starting-out-on-youtube\">What advice would you give someone just starting out on YouTube?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"cs-embed cs-embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pat McGrath The Divine Blush Collection + Voyeuristic Vixen + Divine Glow Highlighter\" width=\"1160\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B1pHw6R8pHY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>You don\u2019t need a sophisticated set up, but you can\u2019t just be just sitting on your floor.\u00a0 Watch your favourite creator and don\u2019t copy them, but take notes on what you want your channel to be.\u00a0 Then, slowly implement it.\u00a0 If you are not where you want to be, but you still want to begin your journey on YouTube, I would say to just start because the hardest thing about starting YouTube is just starting on YouTube.<\/p>\n<p>You can sit there and think, I don\u2019t have the right lighting or cameras but none of us have had the right lighting or cameras when we started.\u00a0 Just use your phone and once you get into the swing of it, then you can upgrade.\u00a0 I upgrade something every other week.\u00a0 You can\u2019t let not having something prohibit you from starting something that you want to do.\u00a0 Be yourself because when you first start YouTube, especially in the beauty industry, it\u2019s easy to morph into the typical beauty personality and become what you think a beauty influencer is.\u00a0 There are already so many people in that same voice so just do you.\u00a0 Bring something different because that\u2019s what we need \u2013 diversity.<\/p>\n<p>I think a lot of people in the beauty space feel like they need to be an expert.\u00a0 You don\u2019t need to be an expert.\u00a0 You can come on and share your journey just like I did.\u00a0 I have traditional makeup artistry training, but many people don\u2019t.\u00a0 Just talk about what you like, how you spend your money, how you do your makeup and people can relate to that. Don\u2019t feel like you have to know every single thing about makeup in order to make a video.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-would-you-describe-your-makeup-style\">How would you describe your makeup style?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1606515\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1606515\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1606515 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/KBJ-3.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube: Kelsee Briana Jai\" width=\"800\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/KBJ-3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/KBJ-3-320x400.jpg 320w, https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/KBJ-3-560x700.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1606515\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of Kelsee Briana Jai<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I\u2019m a combination of edgy and classy.\u00a0 I enjoy classic makeup looks \u2013 fresh faced with a beautiful, sculpted eye.\u00a0 I love a very nice structured lip and a simple cheek.\u00a0 BUT, I also like graphic eyeliner and bold eyeshadows.\u00a0 My makeup style is a mixture of both of those looks and I incorporate some classic, simplistic elements and then put a twist on it.\u00a0 I\u2019m not afraid to experiment with trends and I love colour.\u00a0 There is something beautiful about taking something classic and modernizing it so that it reflects me and where I am in my life.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-trend-would-you-never-try\">What trend would you never try?<\/h2>\n<p>I don\u2019t have a trend that I would absolutely never try.\u00a0 I would try anything once and if it doesn\u2019t work out, at least I can say that I did it.\u00a0 As my makeup preferences change, I may not like something that I used to, but I\u2019m pretty open.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-your-favourite-products-from-your-favourite-brands\">What are your favourite products from your favourite brands ?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Foundation \u2013 SUQQU The Cream Foundation<\/li>\n<li>Powder \u2013 Gucci Poudre De Beaut\u00e9 Mat Naturel Beauty Setting Powder<\/li>\n<li>Lip Products \u2013 Gucci Rouge \u00e0 L\u00e8vres Mat Matte Lipstick<\/li>\n<li>Eyeshadow Palettes \u2013 Pat McGrath Labs Mothership V Eyeshadow Palette &#8211; Bronze Seduction<\/li>\n<li>Mascara \u2013 Pat McGrath Labs Dark Star Volumizing Mascara<\/li>\n<li>Lashes \u2013 Lilly Lashes<\/li>\n<li>Blush \u2013 Pat McGrath Labs Divine Powder Blush but I love the Herm\u00e8s Silky Blushes too<\/li>\n<li>Bronzer \u2013 Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Matte Bronzer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"what-up-and-coming-brand-will-make-the-biggest-splash-this-year\">What up and coming brand will make the biggest splash this year?<\/h2>\n<p>I think Westman Atelier and Lisa Eldridge will both have breakthroughs this year.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"whats-one-thing-people-would-be-surprised-to-learn-about-you\">What\u2019s one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?<\/h2>\n<p>I am an extreme perfectionist. If I do something and I&#8217;m serious about it, it has to be perfect in my eyes. It may not be perfect in other people&#8217;s eyes, but as long as it is in mine, I&#8217;m happy. I set really high goals for myself. I like to push myself and that&#8217;s my strength and weakness. It&#8217;s about finding balance.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"which-youtube-channels-inspire-you\">Which YouTube channels inspire you?<\/h2>\n<p>I am inspired by my entire community and the community of creators that are my friends. It&#8217;s about collaboration over competition. I like channels that are positive and uplifting to others.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-your-long-terms-goals-for-your-youtube-channel\">What are your long terms goals for your YouTube channel?<\/h2>\n<p>To continue to connect with people. I love trying makeup products. As long as there is an audience and I am able to help people feel confident doing their makeup and improve their skill-set, I feel like I&#8217;ve met my goals and that is enough for me long term.
