It all starts with the winemaker.\u00a0 Although, traditionally, wine-making has been a male-dominated field, the tides are turning.\u00a0 Today, women account for 45% of the 2020 graduating class at the Institut des Sciences de la Vignes et du Vin at Bordeaux University \u2013 an exciting development.<\/p>\n<p>Argentine wine brands have led the charge with both female winemakers and vintners like Laura Catena from the Catena Zapata Winery.\u00a0 We had the chance to speak with Laura about her experience as a female vintner on DIVINE \u2013 you can read all about it <a href=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/en\/divine-womeninspiringwomen-laura-catena-vintner-physician-author-part-one\/\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 Now, we want to shine a light on more of the women behind the wine. \u00a0Argentine women have had a profound effect on the wine industry and are at the forefront of shaping the future of winemaking both in Argentina and around the world. They also are in more senior positions behind the scenes. Let\u2019s raise our glass to these fabulous ladies:<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"trapiche-winemaker-alejandra-riofrio\">Trapiche Winemaker &#8211; Alejandra Riofrio<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1600764\" src=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Alejandra-Riofrio-Trapiche.png\" alt=\"Winemaker: Alejandra Riofrio\" width=\"500\" height=\"752\" srcset=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Alejandra-Riofrio-Trapiche.png 500w, https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Alejandra-Riofrio-Trapiche-320x481.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vinsdandurand.com\/en\/wine-producers\/trapiche\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trapiche<\/a> Argentina was named Best New World Winery of the Year in 2019 by Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Awards.\u00a0 This is due to the efforts of their expert winemakers like Alejandra Riofrio.\u00a0 If you drink Pinot Noir, whites, ros\u00e9 and reds, as well as fortified, biodynamic, late harvest and sparkling wines, you may have enjoyed some of Riofrio\u2019s efforts.\u00a0 You may even say that winemaking is in her roots \u2013 she is a native of Mendoza \u2013 Argentina\u2019s largest wine making region.\u00a0 The mother of two joined Trapiche in 2008 after receiving her degree in enology.\u00a0 She is the winemaker of Trapiche Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 \u2013 one of our picks for <a href=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/en\/wine-wednesdays-exploring-argentine-cabernet-sauvignon\/\">Argentine Cabernet Sauvignons<\/a> that you need to try this summer.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"bodega-argento-head-winemaker-silvia-corti\">Bodega Argento Head Winemaker: Silvia Corti<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1600768\" src=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Silvia-Corti-Bodega-Argento.jpg\" alt=\"Winemaker: Silvia Corti\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Silvia-Corti-Bodega-Argento.jpg 500w, https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Silvia-Corti-Bodega-Argento-320x213.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Silvia Corti grew up in the Mendoza region of Argentina.\u00a0 Corti has Italian roots and her passion for winemaking began at a young age at her grandmother\u2019s country house in Agrelo:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cWe made wine, mainly for the family, and I really enjoyed it, helping the grape pickers and filling the bottles when the wine was ready.\u201d\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Corti has a degree in Viticultural Engineering from UNC Mendoza and a Masters in Viticultural Oenology from a joint program between UNC Mendoza and Agro Montpellier France. She has been the head winemaker at <a href=\"https:\/\/profilewinegroup.com\/pages\/bodega-argento\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bodega Argento<\/a> since 2004. \u00a0\u00a0She is responsible for ensuring that Argento\u2019s winemaking philosophy of achieving fruit purity, vibrancy and elegance is implemented at every level of the winemaking process. Corti has helped Bodega Argento develop sustainable production that is at the top international standards.<\/p>\n<p>Her own favourite wine is Malbec:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cIf I had to choose only one wine to drink, it would have to be Malbec. As an Argentinean, I love Malbec, and Mendoza has the perfect growing conditions for it\u201d says Corti. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing to see the diversity of characters that can be achieved from the different terroirs and microclimates in Mendoza.\u201d\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"alamos-head-winemaker-lucia-vaieretti\">Alamos Head Winemaker: Luc\u00eda Vaieretti<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1600771\" src=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/img-winemaker.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"596\" srcset=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/img-winemaker.jpg 652w, https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/img-winemaker-320x381.jpg 320w, https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/img-winemaker-560x667.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A common theme with Argentine winemakers is growing up in the vineyards.\u00a0 Luc\u00eda Vaieretti has a deep bond with Mendoza\u2019s high desert vineyards with her family tending the vines there for more than 40 years.\u00a0 Vaieretti attended Don Bosco in Mendoza, the oldest and most prestigious school of viticulture and enology in South America. She began working for the Catena Family wineries in Mendoza while she was still in school and joined full time in 2006, taking over as head winemaker of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alamoswinesus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alamos<\/a> in 2016.\u00a0 She is passionate about winemaking and has a strong bond with Mendoza that keeps growing:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0\u201cThis is a land of very bold qualities. We have sunshine and desert and our water comes from the snowmelt of our beautiful mountains,\u201d she says. \u201cPeople here really love our land. We appreciate all the beauty here, what we have with our vineyards, and all it can provide.\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Her husband, Rodrigo Calatayud, is also a winemaker and they are passing their knowledge down to their four young daughters as they tend their own 60-year old vineyard planted by Calatayud\u2019s grandfather.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"masi-tupungato-commercial-director-alessandra-boscaini\">Masi Tupungato Commercial Director: Alessandra Boscaini<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1600766\" src=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/AlessandraBoscaini_MasiTupungato.jpg\" alt=\"Winemaker: Alessandra Boscanini\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/AlessandraBoscaini_MasiTupungato.jpg 500w, https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/AlessandraBoscaini_MasiTupungato-320x213.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Alessandra Boscaini is the second daughter of Sandro Boscaini, and one of the seventh generation of the Boscaini family to own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masi.it\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Masi<\/a>. This iconic family winery, at the heart of the Amarone revolution, was founded in 1772 and has enjoyed much international success.\u00a0 Boscaini is not a winemaker, but she holds one of the most important positions within the company.\u00a0 She is in charge of the sales and distribution of Masi\u2019s range of wines in more than 100 countries around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Boscaini inherited her passion for wine from her family, but she brings her own brand of know-how to her role.
