This is the time of year when people are making and breaking New Year’s resolutions.\u00a0 It is important to look at every aspect of your life.\u00a0 That includes keeping yourself healthy and happy.\u00a0 Did you know that your cosmetics can also impact how you feel?\u00a0 This is not just about self-esteem, it is about keeping your makeup hygienic<\/a> to prevent eye infections and skin irritations.\u00a0 It is time to kiss your old bad habits good-bye.\u00a0 We put together our tips so that you can enjoy your makeup collection in 2020:<\/p>\n

I will remove my makeup before going to bed<\/h3>\n

This seems basic, but a lot of people still go to bed with a full face of makeup on and wake up looking like a zombie.\u00a0 Taking your makeup off and washing your face takes under 5 minutes.\u00a0 Remove your shadows, liners and mascara with an eye makeup remover that is formulated for use in the eye area.\u00a0 If you wear a full face of makeup, use a makeup wipe (we like Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes<\/a>) or a reusable makeup remover pad<\/a> with an eye-safe cleanser like Cetaphil.\u00a0 You can then wash your face as you normally would with your favourite cleanser.\u00a0 It takes just a few minutes and will help you have healthier skin.<\/p>\n

\"Elf<\/p>\n

I will wash my makeup brushes weekly<\/h3>\n

Makeup brushes help with application but are breeding grounds for bacteria.\u00a0 They get loaded up with oily makeup residue from liquid makeup like foundations, dead skin cells and bacteria.\u00a0 Taking a few minutes each week to clean your brushes will not only result in a smoother application, but may help prevent eye infections and breakouts.\u00a0 Use a silicon pad<\/a> with a variety of textures and a mild, unscented soap or baby shampoo to clean your brushes.<\/p>\n

I will throw out my mascara every three months<\/h3>\n

Before you ask, the answer is yes, you really need to throw mascara out every three months.\u00a0 It has a very short shelf-life once you open it.\u00a0 If it smells funny or is clumpy, throw it out even sooner.\u00a0 Mascara is another breeding ground for bacteria.\u00a0 Keep you product tightly capped and avoid pumping the wand in and out.\u00a0 Finally, never, ever share your mascara or any eye makeup with anyone.<\/p>\n

I will throw away lipsticks that smell off<\/h3>\n

Lipstick has a longer shelf-life than mascara but doesn’t last forever.\u00a0 An easy way to tell if your lipstick has gone bad is to smell it.\u00a0 If it has a rubbery or crayon-like odor, it is time to throw the lipstick away.\u00a0 If you notice that the appearance of the product has changed (gooey, white spots, etc.) then you should declutter it.\u00a0 Finally, if you have a cold sore or another lip infection, toss the lipstick – you can always buy a new one<\/a> if you loved the colour.<\/p>\n

I will not use foundation and concealers that have started to separate<\/h3>\n

When your foundation and concealers have started to separate, look oily or smell rancid, then you need to stop using them.\u00a0 It is as simple as that.\u00a0 If you use a powder foundation or a cream foundation that comes with a sponge, make sure to wash the applicator weekly.\u00a0 Finally, extend the life of your products by closing the caps tightly and keeping them out of direct sunlight.<\/p>\n

I will not share my makeup<\/h3>\n

We get it, you have an impressive collection.\u00a0 Your friend(s) may not have as much as you or you may be getting ready with your BFF and she loves your eyeshadow or lipstick and wants to try before she buys.\u00a0 Politely say no.\u00a0 This as as much for them as it is for you.\u00a0 They may have an eye infection or cold sore, and you don’t need to share that or vice versa.<\/p>\n

Make 2020 the year that you say yes to good makeup hygiene.<\/p>\n
