{"id":1578169,"date":"2019-12-31T13:51:31","date_gmt":"2019-12-31T18:51:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/divine.ca\/?p=1578169"},"modified":"2020-04-09T14:33:37","modified_gmt":"2020-04-09T18:33:37","slug":"divine-reads-our-picks-for-the-best-books-of-the-last-decade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/divine.ca\/en\/divine-reads-our-picks-for-the-best-books-of-the-last-decade\/","title":{"rendered":"DIVINE Reads: Our Picks for the Best Books of the Last Decade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"pk-dropcap pk-dropcap-borders\">As an avid reader, it was a STRUGGLE to narrow the list down to just ten books.\u00a0 Some of the books selected were published prior to 2010; this is completely based on when the books were read.\u00a0 Reading is subjective, and a good book will either transport your mind to a different place, make you understand situations or bring emotions to the surface that you didn&#8217;t realize were there.\u00a0 This is a mixed bag of picks with novels, biographies, and even a self-help book.\u00a0 Some of the authors are Canadian.\u00a0 The one common thread with all of these books is that they feature strong women who found their voice under difficult circumstances.\u00a0 All moved us and we hope that if you read them, that they will move you as well.<\/p>\n<p>We couldn&#8217;t narrow the list down to ten, so in no particular order, here are our favourite books:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1578187\" src=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/The-nightingale.jpg\" alt=\"The Nightingale Cover Art\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/The-nightingale.jpg 409w, https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/The-nightingale-320x480.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"the-nightingale-by-kristin-hannah\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapters.indigo.ca\/en-ca\/books\/the-nightingale-a-novel\/9781250080400-item.html?ikwid=the+nightingale&amp;ikwsec=Home&amp;ikwidx=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>This story of two French sisters, who could not be more different, is likely one of the reasons why World War II fiction is having a resurgence.\u00a0 Vianne and Isabelle have to do the unexpected and challenge themselves to survive during the Nazi occupation of their beloved country. You will need a box of Kleenex when you read this achingly beautiful novel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1578186\" src=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/First-they-Killed.....jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"328\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/First-they-Killed.....jpg 404w, https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/First-they-Killed....-320x486.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 328px) 100vw, 328px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"first-they-killed-my-father-a-daughter-of-cambodia-remembers-by-loung-ung\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapters.indigo.ca\/en-ca\/books\/first-they-killed-my-father\/9780060856267-item.html?ikwid=first+they+killed+my+father&amp;ikwsec=Home&amp;ikwidx=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers by Loung Ung<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>A book about a survivor of genocide under the regime of Pol Pot is not a light, easy read.\u00a0 It is a story of survival told from the perspective of a young girl, who against all odds lived through war conditions.\u00a0 Ung was a child soldier, then a survivor of the conflict, trying to find the remains of her family, after the fall of the Khmer Rouge.\u00a0 \u00a0 The riveting biography was made into a movie, directed by Angelina Jolie.\u00a0 We know so little about the suffering in Cambodia.\u00a0 This book is a small crash course in the events of the 1970&#8217;s that led to the Killing Fields.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1578185\" src=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/The-Color-of-Our-Sky.jpg\" alt=\"The Color of Our Sky Cover Art\" width=\"303\" height=\"456\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"the-color-of-our-sky-by-amita-trasi\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapters.indigo.ca\/en-ca\/books\/the-color-of-our-sky\/9780062474087-item.html?ikwid=the+color+of+our+sky&amp;ikwsec=Home&amp;ikwidx=11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Color of Our Sky by Amita Trasi<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>If you liked Khaled Hosseini&#8217;s &#8220;One Thousand Splendid Suns&#8221;, then you will love this book.\u00a0 &#8220;The Color of Our Sky&#8221; is is about two childhood friends, one trying to survive the human slave trade as the other tries to save her.\u00a0 I was shocked that this book did not make it onto any of the top books of the decade lists.\u00a0 It is an emotional, beautifully told story of love and trauma in India&#8217;s caste system.\u00a0 Trasi writes so poetically, and with such feeling, that you feel like you are watching this on the big screen as you turn each page.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1578184\" src=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Guernesy-Literary.jpg\" alt=\"The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society\" width=\"317\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Guernesy-Literary.jpg 389w, https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Guernesy-Literary-320x505.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 317px) 100vw, 317px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"the-guernsey-literary-and-potato-peel-pie-society-by-mary-ann-shaffer-annie-barrows\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapters.indigo.ca\/en-ca\/books\/the-guernsey-literary-and-potato\/9781984801814-item.html?ikwid=The+Guernsey+Literary+and+Potato+Peel+Pie+Society&amp;ikwsec=Home&amp;ikwidx=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer &amp; Annie Barrows<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>This novel is also set in World War II.\u00a0 Guernsey, an island in the English Channel, was the only British territory that was occupied by the Nazis in Europe.\u00a0 The story is told completely in letters between Juliet, her loved ones and the people of Guernsey as she tries to research her next book.\u00a0 As she learns more from the Islanders, she decides to travel to Guernsey and what she finds there will change her life forever.\u00a0 This book has everything from warmth and humour to heroism with a few tear-jerking moments in between.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1578183\" src=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Home-for-Unwanted-Girls-resized-800x1205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"332\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Home-for-Unwanted-Girls-resized-800x1205.jpg 800w, https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Home-for-Unwanted-Girls-resized-320x482.jpg 320w, https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Home-for-Unwanted-Girls-resized-560x843.jpg 560w, https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Home-for-Unwanted-Girls-resized.jpg 996w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 332px) 100vw, 332px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"the-home-for-unwanted-girls-by-joanna-goodman\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapters.indigo.ca\/en-ca\/books\/the-home-for-unwanted-girls\/9780062684226-item.html?ikwid=the+home+for+unwanted+girls&amp;ikwsec=Books&amp;ikwidx=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Home for Unwanted Girls by Joanna Goodman<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The story of a young unwed mother who is forcibly separated from her daughter at birth and the lengths to which they go to find each other.\u00a0 It is set in 1950&#8217;s Quebec where there is an English\/French divide and unwed mothers were not allowed to raise their children.\u00a0 The babies were taken from them and raised in the impoverished orphanage system.\u00a0 You will learn some of Canada&#8217;s saddest secrets and root for Elodie and Maggie to find one another.\u00a0 An incredible book by a Canadian author.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1578182\" src=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Every-Note-PLayed.jpg\" alt=\"Every Note Played Book Cover Art\" width=\"327\" height=\"501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Every-Note-PLayed.jpg 401w, https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Every-Note-PLayed-320x490.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 327px) 100vw, 327px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"every-note-played-by-lisa-genova\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapters.indigo.ca\/en-ca\/books\/every-note-played\/9781476717807-item.html?ikwid=every+note+played&amp;ikwsec=Home&amp;ikwidx=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Every Note Played by Lisa Genova<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>A story of a male concert pianist struck with ALS in his prime and his ex-wife who ends of taking care of him.\u00a0 It is the story of forgiveness and redemption.\u00a0 You feel every small bit of independence slipping away from Richard and every bit of frustration that Karina experiences as his caregiver.\u00a0 It is powerful and compelling and you will not be able to put it down.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1578181\" src=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-help.jpg\" alt=\"The Help Book Cover Art\" width=\"324\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-help.jpg 398w, https:\/\/divine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-help-320x494.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 324px) 100vw, 324px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"the-help-by-kathryn-stockett\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapters.indigo.ca\/en-ca\/books\/the-help\/9780425232200-item.html?ikwid=the+help&amp;ikwsec=Books&amp;ikwidx=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Help by Kathryn Stockett<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The story of three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town.\u00a0 Told from the perspectives of young, white and idealistic Skeeter, Aibileen, her former beloved, black nanny and sassy Minny, Aibileen&#8217;s best friend.\u00a0 The book is set in 1962 before the full effects of the Civil Rights Movement had appreciably changed anything for black Americans.\u00a0 These women band together in a secret project that will turn their southern town, upside down.\u00a0 This book is about the things we can live with, and the things that we can&#8217;t &#8211;
